In a recent episode of the Hsu Untied podcast, I was interviewed by Richard Hsu, managing director of Major, Lindsey & Africa, as we explored my journey through two professions, medicine, and the law.
Richard and I discussed my family’s expectations for me to become a physician and my long, but fruitful journey to my true calling in the law. It was my sister, a lawyer herself, who inspired me to go to law school and pursue a career that I have grown to love. I still use my training and experience in medicine, clinical research, and epidemiology to serve my clients today. The ethical, moral, and fiduciary duties owed by a lawyer to a client share many qualities in common with a physician’s duty to a patient. Although I often wish I had begun my legal career earlier in life, my experience in medicine and research continues to enrich my litigation work every single day.
I also discussed with Richard some of my brilliant colleagues here at Nelson Mullins. I mentioned that I was not the only physician-attorney at the firm, sharing that distinction with Erica James, of counsel in our Tampa office. We also discussed Michael Hogue and Eric Paine, two attorney colleagues who have developed such extensive expertise in science and epidemiology that I often feel like I am speaking with my old clinical research colleagues. I am very happy to be where I am in my professional career, and that is attributable to, not despite, my long vagabond journey through multiple professions.
