Pro Bono Spotlight: Heather Toft

This series is aimed at bringing attention to Nelson Mullins attorneys and legal staff who are committed to pro bono work as a part of their legal practice. See how they made a difference through pro bono!

We are pleased to introduce Atlanta Partner Heather Toft, who has been a practicing attorney for more than two decades. A graduate of Florida State University's College of Law, Toft works primarily in the areas of low income housing tax credits (LIHTC), affordable housing equity and debt financing, market rate financing, real estate, and general business organizations law. On top of her practice, she has been a staunch contributor to the firm's pro bono efforts throughout her time at Nelson Mullins.

Describe a compelling pro bono matter in which you are involved.

Through Atlanta Legal Aid, and in coordination with the Jewish Family & Career Services of Atlanta, I attended an event to assist low-income Holocaust survivors in preparing their healthcare directives and financial powers of attorney. By having these documents in place, the survivors will have peace of mind in continuing to receive survivor benefits in the event they lose capacity to complete the necessary paperwork. My clients were in their late 70s to late 80s, and mainly spoke Russian, so interpreters were on hand to assist throughout the process. While the subject matter was somber, my clients were joyful and grateful for the assistance. Respect and gratitude are universal.

What is most meaningful to you about your engagement?

All estate planning events I have attended (Wills for Heroes, Black Women Will) have been impactful, but this event was particularly meaningful. I loved meeting these brave men and women, bridging the language barriers with laughter and grace, and seeing their relief upon completing this very important “to do list” item.
