GREENVILLE, S.C. — Sam Outten, a partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP’s Greenville office, has received the Robert W. Hemphill Award from the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association.
The award, which was first given out by the association in 1988, has been awarded 17 times previously. The Hemphill Award is given to an individual who has shown “distinguished and meritorious service to the legal profession and/or the public, and to one who has been instrumental in developing, implementing and carrying through the objectives of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association.”
The award is named after the late Honorable Robert W. Hemphill, who served as a United States District Judge in South Carolina from 1964 to 1983 and as a member of the United States House of Representatives for South Carolina’s 5th District from 1957 to 1964.
"I’m honored to be named a recipient of this award," Outten said. "I have always enjoyed my involvement in the SCDTAA and am proud of what it does for the legal community in South Carolina. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of the SCDTAA."
Outten is a 1985 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law and represents clients in complex, high-value cases across a variety of practice areas. He has been recognized by Chambers USA, Best Lawyers in America, and Super Lawyers.
Previously, Outten served as President of the SCDTAA from 2003 to 2004 and served on the Board of Directors for the Defense Research Institute. He also served as President of the South Carolina Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates.
"Sam’s experience, drive, and ability make him a strong client advocate and enable him to help clients navigate complex and significant litigation risks. Also, as the leader of a litigation team at Nelson Mullins, Sam is committed to helping other attorneys at our firm to develop and achieve successful careers," Greenville Office Managing Partner John Jennings said. "We are proud that one of our own is only the 18th recipient of this award — which is a well-deserved testament to his dedication to the practice of law, the firm and his clients."
